"I want an iced latte." 틀린 문장은 아닌데, 카페 직원에게는 왜 어색하게 들릴까요?

In Korea, many people order by saying the menu name and the size: "Iced latte, large." In English-speaking cafes, that works, but adding a few polite words makes a big difference.

한국에서는 메뉴 이름과 사이즈만 말해서 주문하는 경우가 많아요. "아이스 라떼, 라지." 영어권 카페에서도 통하긴 하지만, 공손한 말 몇 마디를 더하면 느낌이 확 달라져요.

The most natural way to order is "Can I get ~, please?" It sounds friendly and casual. "I want ~" is grammatically fine, but it can sound a little demanding, like a child asking for candy.

가장 자연스러운 주문 표현은 "Can I get ~, please?"예요. 친근하고 편하게 들려요. "I want ~"는 문법적으로는 맞지만, 아이가 사탕을 달라고 조르는 것처럼 조금 요구하는 말투로 들릴 수 있어요.

Cafes abroad also ask more questions. You might hear "What size?", "Hot or iced?", "What kind of milk?", or "For here or to go?" Don't panic. Answer each one with just a few words, and add "please" at the end. If you didn't catch something, simply say, "Sorry, could you say that again?"

해외 카페는 질문도 더 많이 해요. "사이즈는요?", "뜨거운 걸로요, 아이스로요?", "우유는 뭘로요?", "드시고 가세요, 가져가세요?" 당황하지 마세요. 하나하나 몇 단어로만 답하고 끝에 "please"를 붙이면 돼요. 잘 못 들었으면 "Sorry, could you say that again?"이라고 하면 돼요.
